katrin-mocapanCOSTA RICA EXTRA – Just discovered this new bread place/eatery that is a must try, Mocapan. Located in Escazú, across east of La Paco (across from the home of the US ambassador), Katrin and her husband Simon bring a taste of Germany to Costa Rica.

In fact, their slogan “From Germany With Love!” says it all.

Brezn (soft pretzels), various types of breads and great coffee are part of the menu, that also includes breakfast and lunch.

Katrin told me that and her husband have been planning the concept for almost two years. In January of this year they plunged in, made the move to Costa Rica and four weeks since the opening, and judging by the Saturday morning crowd, the place is a hit.

The bread, muffins, croissants and brezn are always fresh. Nothing rolls over to the next day.

“What isn’t sold today I give away, though there is little left over each night. I hate going into a bread place, to find stale day old bread,” Katrin told me, mentioning a local market (the name is being withheld) that advertises freshness, that for them a day old is fresh enough.

So, how is it that everything is so fresh and tastes great? The secret is in the mix: a mix of importing the products parbaked from Germany, and then finish the cooking process and only in quantities that will be freshly consumed. By not having to bake large batches at one time, they are able to give us fresh products all the time.

Surprise that the prices are reasonable. A muffin, a macchiato and San Pelegrino water is only ¢3.500 colones.

Mocapan is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 7pm, and Sundays from 8am to 6pm. Closed Tuesdays.
