COSTA RICA BUSINESS NEWS — Between October 2013 and September 2014 permits to build 53,827 square meters of hotels were processed, 21% more than in the same period in 2012-2013.
Garabito (Playa Jacó) in the province of Puntarenas, has performed best, as of the total amount of building permits requested for hotel projects in the country, this canton has an 18% share, with a total of 13,455 square meters processed.
Data from the Association of Engineers and Architects mentioned by Nacion.com indicates that “… concentrated in 5 of the 28 counties for which permits were processed are 56% of the square footage to have been built in the last two years. These counties are Garabito, Escazu, San Jose, Sarapiqui and Santa Cruz, where the amount of construction area will exceed 40,000. ”
The Costa Rican Tourism Institute said that “… the data they manage is also encouraging. At least 14 new hotel developments have opened or will open their doors between 2014 and 2016. This corresponds to firms that already have a tourism declaration, therefore it can not be extrapolated.”
